Private island hunters usually strike gold in the Caribbean, or the Finger Lakes, but for savvy buyers who prefer a quick commute to NYC, there are two private islands for sale right here in the Hudson Valley.
Both are unique waterfront properties with lots of privacy, and both have been on the market for some time.
Petre Island, a heart-shaped island in Lake Mahopac, is still on the market. The island has Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes on it: The original 1950s guest house and a spectacular 4-bedroom main residence cantilevered over Lake Mahopac. It was once rumored that Angelina Jolie had purchased the island for her then-partner, Brad Pitt. Pitt was an afficionado of architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
That story did not pan out to a house closing and at the time, the daughter of the island’s owner, Joseph Massaro, told lohud she was never aware that Jolie or Pitt even toured the place.
Note to fans of the HGTV show “Island Hunters”: The just over 10-acre island was featured on an episode.
Petre Island is for sale for $9.95 million, listed with Douglas Elliman.
Next up is Columbia Island, a private retreat just off the coast of New Rochelle. The unique property, once home to a CBS-TV transmission station, has a custom built, totally off-the-grid home.
The four-bedroom, two-bath house uses solar-supplied electricity (there’s a back-up diesel generator), a reverse osmosis water filtration and desalination system, and has its own on-site fire suppression systems (the island isn’t accessible to municipal fire trucks)
Accessible only by boat, the island is just a quick 30-minute “fast” boat ride to the East Side of Manhattan and much quicker to New Rochelle.
It’s on the market for $13 million, listed with Sotheby’s International Realty.
